A Few Shots of Soldier Creek

The road is closed, so I parked at the gate and wandered in. Not another soul in the area. it was lovely to be alone with my thoughts, watching the spring colors start to peak through.

This landscape is so strange to my eyes, even after these years. Little bunches of forest and desert shrubs.  Pops of color draw my eyes to wildflowers... or surveyors tape or old pieces of tarp.

What do I know? Maybe this is all there ever was.  To be wandering alone in the high desert.

Spring Textures

I am clearly absorbed in spring. It is nice to have something to see; something worth photographing.

The way the road winds through the canyon, alive and ready for spring to be here. A sun dappled day.

Just trying to catch the colors, just so. So that I remember how it felt to be there.

Happy Easter...A Few Spring Flowers

The wildflowers are starting to bloom quietly, little flashes of color hidden amongst the sagebrush. The perfume is of summer to come- fresh grass, sage, and the luxuriance rich scent of the wildflowers themselves. It is a secret thing which unfolds only to the rare few who dare wander away from life and into the wilderness.

Winter is Slowly Ending

It is slowly heading to spring around here, which is lovely. Waking up with meadowlark's chirping, and the warm sun that really does warm your bones. Up in the mountains, still snow and no leaves yet. But it will be a lovely spring up there too.

spring moments...not

It's been cold around here, snowing off and on... but the birds are back. And there is just the tiniest fringe of green- a few blades of grass here and there- to let us know that spring is coming. Living in Northern Nevada, your eyes get trained to the small changes. Before I moved here, if I had driven through... not sure I would have noticed the signs of spring. It's a training in subtlety.

I miss Oregon springs... there you know it's spring. Sure, it's grey and cloudy and raining most days. But you can plant seeds in the ground and see them grow into something, the trees and flowers bloom and the rain is a bit heavier and perhaps warmer, sprinkled rarely with hail. The fluorescent grey-green of the lichen fades into the background and fresh leaves pop, the bright green of youth.

the new trend in Elko

You know you're in a mining town when....

a new trend is to paint your car with surveyors paint.

Ruby Mountains Panorama, Lamoille

Went for a fabulous hike- the range front trail is open to about 3 miles in. I love this time of year... the mountains are still tipped in snow and spring is starting to take over.

Ha! You can tell I wrote this a couple days ago. Why? Because it is snowing right now. I feel like this picture is 'dreams of spring.'  Coming from Oregon to Northern Nevada, I definitely prefer seeing snow now and again versus the endless rains of my childhood. It's so light and airy, fluttering down around you, changing sound. But at 5am on the way to work? April? (I've seen it snow here into June too).

Zen. Zen. Zen. I feel like I'm yelling "Serenity now!" LOL

Have a great day.
