Ode to The Cascade Mountains of Oregon

the rain blowing through the trees rocks them back and forth taking the force of the wind but somehow softy swaying brushing each other a gentle sound even in the wild storm rain falling adding a pater to the noises around me the scent of the firs wet moss mud rotting leaves fog cold moist air flowing into my jacket freezing me to the bone I don't even notice just see my dad in a yellow slicker with a zipper not working must be colder than me and wet he doesn't notice either as it pours the rain upon our heads we are baptized by god himself no church can beat this we wander along the logging road and pause and look at the glorious view echoes of mountains peaking through the grey fog and rain the trees etched against the clouded skyline creating pointed spires in rows down the mountain side of a deep rich green that I have known my whole life and the perfect essence of fall the small leaves bright red and orange and yellow cutting the grey and green in sweeping paths down the steep mountains

A Mountain Vision

Just stunning right? Particularly the first one. If I do say so myself.

I spent the whole day imagining I would walk through the fog into another world. Fog always makes me feel like that.

The last photo was on the way back down the trail, so about an hour after the first ones were taken.

A touch of frost in the air

What a spectacular day for a hike, eh? These photos are from Thompson Canyon. We picked it because it's lower elevation. It ended up being harder than we were thinking, just getting going up those hills.  I seriously could not believe we were seeing frost.

Fall lurking

Fall is softly falling upon us

This week will be full of fall photos in the mountains, with the unusual addition of fog. It was very lightly snowing up in the Rubys at times, and I admit to not having quite the correct gear for the day. Still was amazing!

Night hike

I went for an amazing night hike last night with the full harvest moon. It was a bit scary at times, but an amazing experience. Stunning, a highlight of my summer! Not good pictures though.

Just Sketchin'

A little painting I did this weekend, just messing around with technique. I also played with it a bit.

Zen Sunday

Definitely had a nice quiet Sunday, getting ready for the week. Just get into the right frame of mind.

Rain Storms in the high desert, Northern Nevada

The Elko area has had some rainstorms over the last several days, and in fact off and on over the last few weeks, which is unusual in the high desert. I wanted to go out and get a few photos- maybe some storm shots, and a few photos of the sunsets. So I start driving north on Mtn City Highway (225)

At this point I'm definitely liking my chances. I take a left on Hwy 226 towards Tuscarora, and get to just northwest of the Taylor's Creek area, which has a nice view west.

And then I waited for the sunset. For an hour.

Talking on the phone to my dad, and taking random shots.

Wait for it. Wait for it. Here it is!

Hahahahaha. That was it! Around here we do get full 360 degree sunsets, so this tiny blip that lasted for 5 minutes is a hilariously bad sunset to drive an hour to photograph.

One of the Dollar Lakes

I can't believe we all made it through the week! It's been raining pretty hard off and on around here, as a tropical storm circles over the region.  Not too much going on around here, so I guess I better dive into the chores...

Lamoille Lake

Enough panorama's, eh? Well too bad. There were many this go around out hiking. But, that red plant in the background it what I was talking about on the last post. Very pretty from a distance!

Fall Landscape

In Northern Nevada, in the mountains, the color in early fall comes from a plant that turns red when it dies. It's still pretty, especially from a distance.

The Reward

The last two weekends I've been doing a few very long hikes.  Today was the best, probably close to 16 miles.

Photography is going to be the main art for a few days.

LIberty Lake, Lamoille Canyon

Short week... already Wednesday! A beautiful lake photo to remind me of my hiking this last weekend.

LIquid Gold

Got some fabulous shots this weekend. We are just starting to head to fall up in the mountains.
