Snow hiking

My first winter hike where crampons were required.  It is not clear from this photo how steep the mountain is, except I can tell you I came down it on my hands and knees at points. This was one of the most fun hikes I've done.  Highly recommended. Gold stars!

The Enchanted Forest

Winter in the Pacific NW

It's raining. White circles gleam in the low, winter light as the drops hang heavily from the holly leaves on the tree outside of my window. The surface of the leaves are shiny, waxed looking. It does not look as bitingly cold as I know it is- a cold that can only come from cold rain, humidity that pierces to the bone.  In the distance the Douglas fir trees are swaying gently, a sign of intense winds above. I'm about to don gear and wander out into the winter.  The outdoors are not convenient here, as they are in the high desert of northern Nevada. Now every piece of outdoor gear has to be carefully selected and gauged. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Have a fabulous 2015!
